2011-2012 SHS Teacher of the Year

East Wake School of Health Science (EWSHS) in Wendell, NC, named Victoria Mohr, M. Ed., as their 2011-2012 teacher of the year.  Recently, Wake County public schools named Mohr as a semi-finalist for next year’s school system’s teacher of the year.  This is the fourth teacher from EWSHS to receive this honor.   Previous teachers recognized as semi-finalists include Matthew Garcia (2010-2011), Leigh Ciancanelli (2009-2010), and Susan Pullium (2007-2008).  Pullium was also a finalist in the county-wide race.  This is an exceptional track record for the staff of EWSHS.  The school has been a separate entity of East Wake High School since 2005.

HOSA Announces Winners and Upcoming Happenings

Selena Quinteros and Katie Nenez are the newest winners in the District Three Regional Competition in Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) at East Wake School of Health Science.  Quinteros will compete in nursing assistance and Nenez in job seeking skills in the State HOSA competition in March.  Seven members competed in the regional competition.  Topics included health care posters, medical math tests, CPR/first aid, nursing assistance, job seeking skills, and medical terminology testing.   Quinteros and Nenez have a chance to compete in the nationals in Orlando, FL in June.

HOSA will be holding an open house for interested parents and community members during their Health Science Career Fair on March 16.  This is in conjunction with HOSA Week held during March 12-16.  The week also features a juvenile diabetes drive.  HOSA will also help set up and clean up during the school’s blood drive.

The club recently raised $84.00 for this year’s national HOSA service project, the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF).  Members sold Christmas ornaments to hang on a JDRF “Light it up Blue” Christmas tree in the school cafeteria.  “Light it up Blue” is the   international campaign to increase awareness of diabetes.  Presently, approximately one in every 400 children and adolescents has diabetes.

Earlier in the year, three out of the four HOSA officers attended a District 3 leadership training workshop at Miller Motte College, Raleigh. During EWHS Homecoming, HOSA hosted a Carolina Donor Services program and distributed information about becoming an organ donor.
